| UV and You The sun contains ultra violet rays which come to us as invisible light in three categories: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC are the shortest and most dangerous rays. Fortunately we are protected by the ozone from UVC rays. UVA rays and UVB rays are not screened by the ozone. UVA are long wave and UVB are shorter wave rays. While UVA does not necessarily burn the skin, it does penetrate deeply causing everything from leathering, wrinkling and possibly even melanoma. UVB is more powerful than UVA and causes sunburn as well as cell carcinoma and melanoma. SPF To the Rescue Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, measures the amount of protection from reddening a sun block will afford versus how long it would take without any sun block. If it normally takes 20 minutes for your skin to redden without sun block, applying an SPF 15 will prevent reddening 15 times longer or 5 hours (20 minutes times 15). Varying SPF ratings block different levels of UVB. SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays while and SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. Children and the Sun Sunburn at an early age is a key risk factor for melanoma. It is said that a single severe sunburn in childhood doubles the risk of melanoma. In addition to the obvious hints like making sure that children are not left out in unshaded areas for long periods of time, you can also make sure sun block is applied before going outside at the beginning of their day. And it should be reapplied several times during the day. |
